Alpine House, Intervale, NH

This 1100-square-foot home is built as a slab on grade with two bedrooms, one bath, and an upstairs loft used as an office and storage area. The house features all electric appliances, an air source heat pump, and a wood-burning soapstone heater by Tulikivi. With an air tightness of 0.6 ACH50 (Air Changes per Hour at 50 Pascals), the building exceeds the requirements of the Passive House standard. Throughout the winter, the owners rely primarily on the Tulikivi for heat, burning one fire in the morning and one at night, allowing the large soapstone mass to emit heat evenly throughout the space for the rest of the day. In the summer months, aluminum sunshades oriented to the south/southeast provide passive cooling.
