Winchendon Mixed Use Housing, Winchendon, MA

A subsidized housing project funded by the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development through the local housing authority. This program combined family, elderly, and special needs housing on a single site. An architecture of small buildings set along both sides of a new residential street, with cut-out front porches and private front yards defined by picket fences, was conceived to support a community made up of diverse members. Ten years later, the porches are well furnished as outdoor rooms and the yards are well tended, suggesting that buildings of this scale can successfully be claimed by their tenants as if they are their own.
